What Is ABS (Anti Lock Braking System) and How Does It Work?
Antilock Braking System (ABS) is one of the most important safety features in modern-day vehicles. ABS offers improved safety by preventing the wheels from locking up during severe braking; this allows for the driver to steer the vehicle while braking and provides better control when driving in hazardous conditions. ABS works by controlling the pressure of each individual brake, providing a smooth and even brake pressure while preventing skidding and loss of control.
Antilock Braking System uses sensors that are located on each wheel of the vehicle. These sensors work by monitoring wheel rotation and transmitting the data to the onboard computer. As the driver applies the brakes, the ABS controller analyses the wheel speed sensors, calculating the speed of each wheel. If the controller detects that the wheel is about to lock up, it rapidly decreases the pressure of the brake fluid to that wheel.
The decrease or release of pressure on the brake pedal allows the wheel to turn freely, preventing skidding. The ABS controller then increases the brake pressure to the wheels that are still rotating normally. This pressure regulation process is repeated several times up to 20 times per second. This action allows the vehicle to decelerate quickly, safely and remain under control even when sudden stops are required.
The ABS system is not a substitute for safe driving habits. ABS will provide optimum performance in a range of driving conditions, but the driver should continue to maintain control of the vehicle by steering as normal.
