iPhone 12 water test: How deep can Apple’s phone really go?
Introduction:
Apple has always been at the forefront of technology, pushing the boundaries and introducing new features that make their devices unique. With the release of the iPhone 12, it’s become clear that the company has invested in making their latest offering not only powerful but a reliable companion to its users in any environment. One surprising aspect of the iPhone 12 is its improved water resistance capabilities. But just how deep can Apple’s phone really go? We decided to test this out and determine its true limits.
The Water Resistance Claim:
The iPhone 12 comes with an IP68 rating, which translates to complete dust resistance and protection from water up to a depth of six meters (19.6 feet) for up to 30 minutes. This is an improvement from the previous iPhone models such as the iPhone 11, which had an IP68 rating with a limit of two meters (6.5 feet) for up to 30 minutes.
Conducting the Water Test:
To determine whether these claims hold true, we conducted a comprehensive water test with varying depths and durations. The following were our test parameters:
1- Depth Test: Varying levels would be tested up to six meters.
2- Duration Test: Immersed at different periods up to 60 minutes.
3- Functional Test: An assessment of various functions after each water test exposure.
Findings: Depth & Duration
Our findings indicated that the iPhone 12 performed exceptionally well in various tests conducted frequently above the rated depth and duration limits. It remained functional and without visible damage or loss of features after multiple tests.
At six meters, the maximum rated depth, there was no sign of leakage or compromise in device performance based on our tests. We even tried taking it slightly beyond six meters for brief durations, and saw little significant change in performance.
Regarding duration, we found that the iPhone 12 could withstand water exposure for up to 60 minutes, which is twice the advertised tolerance. While minor glitches were observed once submerged beyond 30 minutes, the device was fully functional after drying.
Post-Testing Functionality:
The primary concern after water immersion is whether a device will still function as expected. Our post-test assessment revealed that speaker performance, touch screen sensitivity, and overall functionality were excellent. The device’s water resistance performance exceeded expectations in regards to Apple’s claims.
Conclusion:
Apple’s claim of water resistance for the iPhone 12 holds true in nearly all scenarios. The depth and duration limits seem to provide a comfortable margin. While it may not be advisable to deliberately exceed the rated limits, this smartphone has proven itself capable of performing well in situations where it might be unintentionally subjected to water exposure.
Note that these tests are not exhaustive or definitive, and individual results may vary. However, based on our investigation, we can confidently say that Apple has delivered on their promise of a highly water-resistant iPhone 12 that stands up to its advertised limits and beyond.
