How to Tell the Difference Between Airpods 1 and 2
There are two versions of Apple AirPods: the first-generation AirPods and the second-generation AirPods. Both of them look almost identical from the outside, with the only physical difference being the charging case. However, there are several ways to tell the difference between AirPods 1 and 2.
1. Model Number
The easiest way to tell the difference is to check the model number. The first-generation AirPods have the model number A1523, while the second-generation AirPods have the model number A2032.
You can find the model number on the back of the AirPods charging case. Open the lid and turn it over. The model number is printed near the bottom of the case.
2. LED Indicator
The charging case of the AirPods 2 has an LED indicator on the front, while the first-generation AirPods charging case doesn’t have any LED light. The LED indicator on AirPods 2 reflects the charging status of the earbuds and the charging case.
When the AirPods and their case are together and charging, the LED on the front will turn from amber to green. If you see this green light on the front of your charging case, it means you have AirPods 2.
3. Wireless Charging Case
One significant difference between AirPods 1 and 2 is the charging case. Apple has upgraded the charging case of the AirPods 2 to offer two ways of charging: standard lighting cable and wireless charging through a charging mat.
If you have a charging case that can charge wirelessly, you have the AirPods 2. Keep in mind that while the AirPods 2 charging case can be charged wirelessly, it also charges via the lightning cable, in the same way as the AirPods 1.
4. Siri Commands
One new feature of the AirPods 2 is the ability to activate Siri hands-free with “Hey Siri” voice commands. This feature is only available on the AirPods 2, and not on the AirPods 1. If you prefer to use Siri voice commands for your Apple devices, then AirPods 2 would be the ones to choose.
5. Improved Battery Life
Another key feature of the AirPods 2 is the improved battery life. The second-generation AirPods can last up to 5 hours of listening time and 3 hours of talk time, while the first-generation AirPods last up to 4 hours of listening time and 2 hours of talk time.
If you want longer battery life, then AirPods 2 is the choice for you.
In conclusion, while AirPods 1 and 2 look almost identical on the outside, there are different ways to tell them apart. The easiest way is to check the model number, the presence of the LED indicator, and the charging case features to determine which version you have.
