How to Step and Repeat in Illustrator
If you’re looking to create a pattern or design that repeats, then you’ll want to learn how to step and repeat in Illustrator. This feature allows you to duplicate an object or group of objects evenly spaced and aligned. Here’s how to do it:
Step 1: Create your object
First, you’ll need to create the object or group of objects you want to repeat. You can use any tool in Illustrator to create your design or layout—you might even use a combination of shapes, text and photos.
Step 2: Select the object
Select the object, or group of objects, you want to repeat. You can select multiple objects by holding down the shift key while clicking on each object.
Step 3: Open the “Transform” panel
You can access the Transform panel by clicking on “Window” in the top navigation menu, then selecting “Transform” from the dropdown.
Step 4: Set the distance and direction of your repeat
In the Transform panel, you’ll see options for height, width, X and Y positions of the selected object. To repeat the object, look for the “copies” option towards the bottom of the panel. Click on the black arrow to reveal the options. Here, you can set the number of copies you want to create and the distance and direction you’d like to place them at.
Step 5: Check the preview box and adjust as needed
Before confirming the step and repeat, be sure to check the “Preview” box at the bottom of the Transform panel. You can adjust the distance, direction or number of repeats as needed until you’re satisfied with the result.
Step 6: Confirm the step and repeat
Now that you’ve set up the step and repeat for your object, click “OK” to confirm it. You’ll now have a row or grid of duplicated objects that are evenly spaced and aligned as per your settings.
That’s it! With this simple yet powerful feature, you can now create complex and intricate patterns in Illustrator. This technique is useful for creating backgrounds, borders, patterns and anything else you can think up. Give it a try and see how you can make use of it in your own designs.
