With advancing technology, it is becoming easier to make anonymous phone calls and send text messages from fake numbers using text apps. These text apps usually allow the user to change their phone number and make it appear as if the communication is coming from a different number. The question remains: can these fake numbers be traced?

Unfortunately, tracing fake numbers is not an easy task. Text apps essentially act as a middleman between the sender and the receiver of a text message. They do not usually disclose the phone number of the sender, thereby making it difficult to trace the fake number. Service providers typically need a court order to release the identity of the subscriber whose phone number was used to send the text message.

However, some text apps require users to provide personally identifying information, such as their email address or credit card information. This information could be used by law enforcement agents to track down the suspect in the event of a criminal investigation. It is essential to note, however, that this information might not be sufficient to provide the exact location of the suspect.

Additionally, there are ways that fake numbers can be traced by tracing the IP address. Every device that connects to the internet has a unique IP address that can be tracked. If someone uses a text app to send a message, it will go through the app’s server, and therefore, their IP address will be attached to the message.
Although, using IP addresses to trace a fake number has its limitations as well. The location of the IP address, the use of VPN or other encryption methods, and a lack of expertise on the part of the investigator can make tracking through the IP address ineffective.
