Apple AirTag vs. Tile: Which Tracker Is Best?
For years, Tile has been the go-to brand for those looking to keep track of their belongings, from keys to wallets and everything in between. However, with the recent launch of Apple’s AirTag, consumers now have another option when it comes to item tracking. But which tracker is the best?
Design
At first glance, the two devices are quite similar in design. Both are small, circular discs that attach to your belongings via a keyring or adhesive. However, the AirTag boasts a sleeker, more minimalist design compared to the more colorful and playful look of the Tile.
Connectivity
The AirTag utilizes Apple’s U1 chip for ultra-wideband connectivity, while Tile uses Bluetooth for tracking. This means the AirTag has more precise location tracking and can even provide haptic feedback through an iPhone’s “Find My” app when you’re near the lost item. However, this feature is only available on newer iPhones with the U1 chip. Tile, on the other hand, has been around for longer and is compatible with a wider range of smartphones.
Battery Life
Both trackers use replaceable batteries, but the AirTag boasts a longer battery life, with up to a year of use from a single battery, while the Tile offers a battery life of about a year and a half. However, battery replacement can be more complicated on the AirTag, as it requires a special tool to open the device.
Privacy
One significant difference between the two trackers is privacy. Apple has placed a heavy emphasis on privacy with its AirTag. The device does not track location data unless it is separated from its owner for a certain amount of time, and it does not track location data from other iPhones unless the owner explicitly allows it. Tile, on the other hand, collects location data and shares it with other Tile users, which could be seen as a potential privacy concern.
Price
Price may be a significant factor for many consumers when choosing between the two trackers. Apple’s AirTag is priced at $29 for a single unit or $99 for a pack of four. Tile’s trackers come in a range of prices, depending on the specific model, with the standard Tile Mate starting at $25 and the premium Tile Pro priced at $35.
