Your Mac’s Firewall is Off By Default: Do You Need to Enable It?
As a Mac user, you may have noticed that your firewall is turned off by default. This might leave you wondering if you need to enable it or if it is necessary at all. The short answer to that question is, yes, you should enable your firewall.
Firewalls are essential security features that help protect our devices from unauthorized access, malware, and other online threats. They act as a barrier between your device and the internet, monitoring and filtering all incoming and outgoing traffic to ensure that only safe traffic is allowed through.
While Macs are generally known for their security features, no device is entirely immune to online threats. You might not even be aware that you are being targeted until it is too late. This is where your firewall comes in handy.
By turning on your firewall, you can have an additional layer of protection between your Mac and the internet. Most modern Macs come with macOS’s built-in firewall called “Application Firewall” that you can control through System Preferences. The advantage of enabling Application Firewall is that it can control what apps are allowed to establish connections with the internet. This can help prevent malicious apps from sending out any data without your knowledge.
If you’re someone who spends a lot of time online, then enabling your firewall is a no-brainer. Additionally, if you connect to public Wi-Fi networks which are highly vulnerable to attacks, a firewall can keep your data safer.
Enabling your firewall is relatively easy. To do this, go to System Preferences and click on “Security & Privacy,” then select the “Firewall” tab. Click on “Turn On Firewall” button, and you’re good to go.
However, keep in mind that the firewall is not a complete solution to keep your Mac safe. It’s essential to keep your macOS up to date, use anti-malware software, implement strong passwords, and use two-factor authentication whenever possible.
