How to Free Up RAM and Reduce RAM Usage on Windows
Random Access Memory (RAM) is an essential component of a computer that temporarily holds data and programs currently in use. However, inadequate RAM can cause your system to slow down, and heavy application usage can lead to running out of memory. To improve your computer’s performance and prevent crashes, you need to utilize available RAM efficiently.
Here are some tips and tricks to help you free up RAM and reduce its usage on Windows:
1. Close unnecessary programs and services: Close all programs or applications that are not in use or have been idle for some time. Also, stop unnecessary system services and processes that utilize a considerable amount of memory. To close these programs, open the task manager (press Ctrl+Shift+Esc), select the program, and click on “End Task.”
2. Disable startup programs: Many programs disguised as essential services start running automatically when you start your computer. It leads to excessive memory usage and slows down your computer significantly. To disable startup programs, press the Windows key, type “msconfig,” and open the System Configuration tab. Under the Startup tab, select the unnecessary services, and click on “Disable.”
3. Use the Resource Monitor: The Windows Resource Monitor provides a detailed overview of your system’s hardware and software components. It helps to identify the applications and services consuming the maximum memory. To open, press Windows+R, type “resmon.exe,” and hit Enter. Under the Memory tab, you can monitor the memory usage of each program.
4. Use Cleaners and Optimizers: Cleaners and optimizers like CCleaner or Advanced System Optimizer help remove cache files, temporary files, and other junk files that unnecessarily clutter your computer’s memory. They free up space and boost your computer’s performance.
5. Upgrade RAM: If your system runs out of memory frequently, upgrading RAM is the only viable option. It depends on the motherboard, processor, and operating system of your computer. You can use the Crucial Advisor tool to determine the type of Ram required for your computer.
6. Virtual Memory: Virtual memory is an extension to your computer’s physical memory. When your computer runs out of RAM, Virtual memory acts as a temporary storage system. It uses the hard disk space as memory. Increasing Virtual memory can help reduce memory usage. To adjust Virtual memory settings, press Windows+R, type “sysdm.cpl,” and hit Enter. Under the Advanced tab, select Settings under performance; then, under the Advanced tab again, click Change under virtual memory.
