Step 1: Complete a Teacher Preparation Program that has been Approved
To teach in the United States, educators must have at least a bachelor’s degree. To acquire certification in Louisiana, students must finish a state-approved teacher education program. A license area of specialization, education courses, field experience, and student teaching are all required in Louisiana. Any teacher education program in Louisiana must include 180 hours of field experience and a one-year teaching residency. The Louisiana Department of Education’s preparation website has a list of recognized teacher education programs.
Step 2: Pass the Requisite Exams
Most states in the United States require tests to demonstrate proficiency in both fundamental abilities and your academic area. The Pre Professional Skills Test (PPST) is required for basic skills, as well as the Praxis II: Subject Exams and Praxis II: Principles of Learning and Teaching (PLT) for subject area competency in Louisiana.
For three years, the Level 1 Professional Certificate is valid. The Level 2 Professional Certificate is awarded to educators with at least three years of experience who have completed the Louisiana Teacher Assistance and Assessment Program (LaTAAP), a two-year mentoring and assessment program that evaluates the teacher’s subject area knowledge and classroom management skills. It is renewable every five years. Educators with five years of experience in their field of licensure who have passed the Louisiana Teacher Assistance and Assessment Program (LaTAAP) and have a master’s degree are eligible for the Level 3 Professional Certificate.
