USB Ports Not Working? How to Diagnose and Fix the Issue in Windows
USB ports not working can be a frustrating issue, especially if you rely on USB devices for work or play. Fortunately, there are a few things you can do to diagnose and fix the issue in Windows.
Diagnosing the Issue:
1. Check Device Manager: The first step is to check the Device Manager to see if the USB ports are recognized by the computer. To do this, press the Windows key + X and select Device Manager. Look for any yellow exclamation marks or red X’s next to the USB devices. If you see this, it means that there is an issue with the device driver.
2. Test a Different USB Device: If you have a different USB device, try connecting it to the computer to see if it works. If it does, then the issue is likely with the previous device. If it doesn’t, then the issue is likely with the USB port or driver.
3. Check BIOS Settings: If none of the USB ports are working, it’s possible that USB support has been disabled in the BIOS. To access the BIOS, restart your computer and press F2, Delete, or F10 (depending on your computer) to enter the BIOS settings. Look for a setting related to USB support and make sure it is enabled.
Fixing the Issue:
1. Update Drivers: If the USB ports are recognized by the computer but aren’t working correctly, updating the device driver is the first step in fixing the issue. This can be done by going to the manufacturer’s website and downloading the latest driver for your specific computer model.
2. Restart the Computer: Sometimes a simple restart of the computer can fix any issues with the USB ports.
3. Uninstall and Reinstall USB Controllers: If updating the drivers doesn’t work, another option is to uninstall the USB controllers and reinstall them. To do this, go to Device Manager, right-click on the USB controllers, and select Uninstall. Then restart your computer, and the drivers should reinstall automatically.
4. Check Power Management Settings: Windows has a Power Management feature that can sometimes cause USB devices to stop working. To check this, go to Device Manager, right-click on the USB controllers and select Properties. Click on the Power Management tab and uncheck the option “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.”
