Tips to Customize the Cinnamon Desktop in Linux
Cinnamon is a popular desktop environment for Linux, known for its easy-to-use interface and customization features. With Cinnamon, you can personalize your Linux experience by adjusting settings for the panel, desktop, and menu, as well as installing themes and extensions. Here are some tips to help you get started customizing your Cinnamon desktop.
- Choose a Theme
Cinnamon comes with a built-in theme selector, which can be accessed through the settings app. You can choose from several pre-installed themes, or download and install new ones from the official Cinnamon website or other sources. Themes can change the look of your Cinnamon desktop, from the color of the window borders to the background image, so you can choose one that matches your personal style.
- Add Extensions
Cinnamon supports extensions, which are small plugins that can add new features and functionality to your desktop environment. To install extensions, open the settings app and select the “Extensions” tab. From there, you can browse and install extensions, such as weather forecast, system monitor, and more. Extensions can be a great way to customize your desktop by adding new tools or information at your fingertips.
- Tweak the Panel
The panel is the bar located at the top or bottom of the screen, which displays the menu, clock, open windows, and other widgets. You can customize the panel by right-clicking on it and choosing “Configure Panel.” From there, you can adjust the size, position, and behavior of the panel items. You can also add new items to the panel, such as app launchers or workspace switchers.
- Configure Hot Corners
Hot corners are areas of the screen that trigger specific actions when you mouse over them. For example, you can set a hot corner to show the overview of all open windows, or to launch a specific application. To configure hot corners, open the settings app and select the “Hot Corners” tab. From there, you can choose the corner and the action you want to assign to it.
- Customize the Menu
The Cinnamon menu is the central hub for accessing applications, files, and system settings. You can customize the menu by right-clicking on it and choosing “Configure.” From there, you can add or remove categories, change the layout, and adjust the search behavior. You can also create custom launchers for your favorite applications, by right-clicking on an item in the menu and choosing “Add to Favorites.”
