Pokemon Red, Blue and Yellow: How to Obtain All HMs
Pokémon Red, Blue, and Yellow are classic RPG games that have been enjoyed by millions for over two decades. These games feature a variety of powerful moves known as Hidden Machines (HMs), which allow your Pokémon to perform special abilities to help you navigate the various environments you encounter on your adventure.

HM01 – Cut
Cut is a crucial HM that allows you to cut down small trees that block your path. To obtain this HM, you’ll need to defeat Misty, the Cerulean City Gym Leader, and then make your way to the S.S. Anne. On board the ship, you’ll meet the captain who will give you the Cut HM as a reward for helping him when he is feeling seasick.
HM02 – Fly
Fly is an incredibly useful HM that allows you to quickly travel to any town or city that you have previously visited. To obtain this HM, you’ll need to defeat the Celadon City Gym Leader, Erika. After obtaining the Rainbow Badge, head to the house on the west side of the city and speak to the little girl inside. She will give you the Fly HM as a reward.
HM03 – Surf
Surf is one of the most valuable HMs in the game, as it allows you to travel quickly over water and explore new areas that were previously inaccessible. To obtain the Surf HM, you’ll need to defeat the Safari Zone and earn the HM03 from one of the wardens inside.
HM04 – Strength
Strength is an HM that allows your Pokémon to push large boulders out of the way, revealing new paths and secrets. To obtain the Strength HM, you’ll need to defeat the Fuchsia City Gym Leader, Koga. After earning the Soul Badge, head to the house on the east side of the city and speak to the man inside. He will give you the Strength HM as a reward.
HM05 – Flash
Flash is an HM that allows you to light up dark caves, making them easier to navigate. To obtain the Flash HM, you’ll need to defeat the Vermillion City Gym Leader, Lt. Surge. After earning the Thunder Badge, head to the second floor of the Diglett’s Cave and speak to the man there. He will give you the Flash HM as a reward.
HM06 – Rock Smash
Rock Smash is an HM that allows you to smash large rocks, revealing new areas and secrets. To obtain the Rock Smash HM, head to the house in the southwest corner of Cianwood City and speak to the man inside. He will give you the HM as a reward.
HM07 – Waterfall
Waterfall is an HM that allows your Pokémon to climb up cascading waterfalls. To obtain the Waterfall HM, you’ll need to defeat the Elite Four and become the Pokémon Champion. After becoming the Champion, head to the Icefall Cave and climb up the waterfall on the second floor. At the top, you’ll find a man who will give you the Waterfall HM.
