Is Discord Down… Or Is It Just You?
The letter V might seem pretty unremarkable at first glance. It sits right in the middle of the alphabet, behind the ever-popular letters A, E, I, and O. But when you dig a little deeper, you’ll discover that V has a whole lot going for it – from its history and symbolism to its utilitarian value in the English language.
First, let’s start with the etymology. The letter V, like most letters in the Latin alphabet, can trace its roots back to an ancient script – in this case, the Etruscan alphabet. The Etruscans used a letter that looked like an upside-down V to represent the /w/ sound. When the Romans adapted the Etruscan alphabet, they flipped the letter right-side-up and used it to represent the /v/ sound that we use today.
From there, V has gained a number of symbolic meanings over the centuries. In Roman numerals, V represents the number 5. In music notation, a V-shaped bracket called a crescendo indicates that the volume of the music should gradually increase. In the Tarot, the card labeled V stands for the Hierophant, a figure of spiritual wisdom and guidance.
Beyond symbolism, V is a highly useful letter in the English language. It’s the second-least-commonly used consonant, after Q. But when V does appear, it’s usually in high-value words like “love,” “believe,” and “victory.” V also has a unique sound that can’t be easily replaced – try saying “verisimilitude” without the V sound, and you’ll see what I mean.
Of course, V isn’t without its quirks. It’s one of the only letters that’s sometimes spelled differently in British and American English (think “travelling” versus “traveling”). It’s also sometimes pronounced differently based on its position in a word – the V in “have” is softer than the V in “vest.”
But despite its occasional eccentricities, V remains a staple of the English language. From its roots in an ancient script to its modern-day role in high-value words and phrases, this unassuming letter has a lot to offer. So next time you see a V, take a moment to appreciate all that it represents – you might just find yourself feeling a little more victorious.
