How to Move Columns in Excel (4 Ways)

1. Using the Drag and Drop Method:

One important thing to note when using the drag and drop method is that Excel will not move any data that is in the column that is being moved. Instead, it will leave a blank column where the column used to be, and move the data in the surrounding columns to fill the space.
2. Using the Cut and Insert Method:
Another way to move a column is by using the cut and insert method. To do this, first, select the column you want to move. Then, right-click on the column header and select “Cut” from the context menu.
Next, select the cell where you want to insert the column, right-click on it, and select “Insert Cut Cells” from the context menu. This will move the column to the new location and shift any columns to the right of it over by one cell.
3. Using the Copy and Paste Method:
The copy and paste method is similar to the cut and insert method but allows you to keep a copy of the original column. To use this method, first, select the column you want to move. Then, right-click on the column header and select “Copy” from the context menu.
Next, right-click on the column header where you want to move the copied column, and select “Insert Cut Cells” from the context menu. Finally, right-click on the original column header and select “Delete” to remove the original column.
4. Using the Sort Function:
The final method for moving columns in Excel is by using the sort function. This method is particularly useful if you need to move multiple columns at once. To do this, select the range of cells that contains the columns you want to move.
Next, click on the “Sort & Filter” button in the “Editing” group on the “Home” tab, and select “Custom Sort” from the menu. In the “Sort” dialog box, select the column that you want to move to the new location and choose the appropriate sort order.
This will move the selected column to the new location and reorder the rest of the columns accordingly.
