How to Create a Heat Map in Excel
Heat maps are a powerful tool that is used to visualize complex data sets in a simple manner. They are extensively used in business and scientific applications to identify patterns and trends. Even if you are not a data analyst, you can create a heat map in Excel with only a few skills.
Step 1: Organize Your Data
The first step in creating a heat map is organizing your data. Ensure that the data is in a table format where each row represents a data point, and each column represents a metric.
Step 2: Create a Pivot Table
After organizing your data, you need to create a pivot table. Pivot tables are an excellent tool for summarizing data and making it easier to visualize.
To create a pivot table:
1. Go to the ‘Insert’ tab and click on ‘PivotTable.’
2. In the PivotTable field list, drag the metric that you want to visualize.
3. Drag the rows that you want to see in the heat map into the ‘Rows’ field.
4. Drag the columns that you want to see in the heat map into the ‘Columns’ field.
Step 3: Insert Conditional Formatting
The next step is to insert conditional formatting in the pivot table. Conditional formatting will enable you to color code cells according to the values in the cell.
1. Select the cells that you want to apply the conditional formatting.
2. Go to the ‘Home’ tab and click on ‘Conditional Formatting.’
3. Click on ‘Color Scales,’ and choose a color pattern that you prefer.
Step 4: Adjust the Cell Size
When you create a heat map, you want to ensure that the cells are easy to view and read. Therefore, you need to adjust the cell size to ensure that you can view all the data clearly.
To adjust the cell size:
1. Select all the cells in the pivot table.
2. Right-click on the selected cells and choose ‘Row Height’ or ‘Column Width.’

After creating a heat map in Excel, the final step is to save and share the visualization.
To save the heat map:
1. Click the ‘File’ tab and choose ‘Save As.’

3. Type a name for the file and click ‘Save.’
To share the heat map:
