How to Create a Custom Keyboard Layout on Windows
Do you find yourself struggling to type in a foreign language or on a keyboard with a different layout than what you’re used to? Creating a custom keyboard layout on Windows can make typing easier and more efficient. Here’s how to do it:
Step 1: Download Microsoft’s Keyboard Layout Creator
The first step to creating a custom keyboard layout is to download Keyboard Layout Creator. This is a free tool developed by Microsoft that allows you to create your own keyboard layout. Once the application is downloaded, install it on your computer.
Step 2: Open Keyboard Layout Creator
After installation, open the Keyboard Layout Creator. You will see a blank keyboard layout grid with keys and characters. This is where you can customize and create your new keyboard layout.
Step 3: Choose a Base Keyboard Layout
Choose a base keyboard layout that you want to modify or create a new one from scratch. Select the “File” drop-down menu and choose “Load Existing Keyboard.” You can choose from a range of pre-existing keyboard layouts, including standard US, UK or international layouts. Alternatively, you can create your own starting from scratch.
Step 4: Customize Your Keyboard
Now you can start customizing your keyboard layout. Click on the key that you would like to modify, and a new window will appear, allowing you to choose a character, symbol or command to assign to that key. You can also assign different functions to keys like Alt, Ctrl, and Shift.
Step 5: Test Your Keyboard Layout
Once you have made changes to the keyboard layout, you can test it to ensure that it works as intended. You can do this by selecting the “Project” drop-down menu and choosing “Test Keyboard Layout.” This will launch a virtual keyboard that allows you to test out your new layout.
Step 6: Save and Install Your Custom Keyboard Layout
After you have tested your new keyboard layout, you can save it by selecting the “Project” drop-down menu and choosing “Save Project As.” This will save your project as a .klc file, which can then be installed on any Windows computer. You can install the new layout by double-clicking the .klc file, and then selecting “install.”
Creating a custom keyboard layout on Windows may seem daunting at first, but with Microsoft’s Keyboard Layout Creator, it’s a simple and straightforward process. With a customized keyboard layout, you can increase productivity and make typing in different languages or on different keyboard layouts easier and more efficient.
