How to Combine Multiple Partitions Into a Single Partition
If you have several partitions on your computer’s hard drive and find it hard to manage, you can merge them into a single partition. Merging partitions help to free up unnecessary space, make things easier to control, and ensure you’re combining everything you need into a single folder.
Here are the steps you can follow to combine multiple partitions into one:
1. Backup your data
Before proceeding with the process, you should back up your data, which is the most crucial step. You don’t want to lose all your data if something goes wrong. Therefore, create a backup to an external hard drive or store it in the cloud.
2. Open the Disk Management tool
Press the Windows key + X on your keyboard to open the WinX menu, and then select Disk Management.
3. Delete unnecessary partitions
If you have any extra partitions that you no longer need, delete them. However, you first need to know which partitions to delete to avoid deleting a necessary partition accidentally.
4. Shrink the partitions you want to combine
If your partitions contain data, it’s only possible to merge them while they still have space available. So, right-click on the partitions you want to combine and select ‘Shrink Volume.’ Choose a suitable size to shrink the partition.
5. Create a new partition
Next, create a new partition that will be the recipient of the partition you’ve shrunk. Right-click on the free space you just created and select ‘New Simple Volume.’ A wizard will pop up and guide you through setting up the new partition.
6. Merge the partitions
After creating the new partition, you can merge the other two partitions into one. Right-click on the partition you want to get rid of and select ‘Delete Volume.’ When all the partitions are deleted, right-click on the newly created partition and select ‘Extend Volume.’ The wizard will instruct you to extend the partition to which the deleted volumes will be merged.
7. Format the new partition
Before using the new partition, you need to format it to a file system that is compatible with your operating system. Right-click on the new partition drive and select ‘Format.’ Choose the file system format you want, give your partition a name, and click on OK to format.
In conclusion, if you have multiple partitions on your computer’s hard drive, merging them into a single partition can simplify things and create a more manageable space. With these steps, the process of combining partitions becomes much easier. Just remember to back up your data before you start, and that each step should be done carefully to avoid any mistakes that might lead to data loss.
