Step 1: Complete a Teacher Preparation Program that has been Approved

To teach in the United States, educators must have at least a bachelor’s degree. To gain certification in Kentucky, students must finish a state-approved teacher education program. Certification to teach elementary school (grades 1-6) in Kentucky necessitates the completion of courses in the subject areas taught in elementary school. Kentucky requires middle school (grades 5-9) teachers to have a major in one of the following subjects: English, math, social studies, or science, with a major equaling 30 semester hours of coursework. Educators in secondary schools (grades 8-12) must have a 30 semester-hour major. In Kentucky, supervised student instruction is also required. Step 2: Pass the Requisite Exams

Most states in the United States require tests to demonstrate proficiency in both fundamental abilities and your academic area. For fundamental abilities (needed for admittance into some teacher education programs), Kentucky employs the Pre Professional Skills Test (PPST), and for subject area competence, the Praxis II: Subject Exams and Praxis II: Principles of Learning and Teaching (PLT) exams.

There are three levels of licensing in Kentucky:

Rank III: The provisional credential granted to new educators with an undergraduate degree.

Rank II: A master’s degree or at least 32 semester hours of graduate credit are required for rank II.

Rank I: 60 semesters of graduate credit, including a master’s degree, are required for Rank I.

Step 3: Complete an Application for a Kentucky Teaching Credential.
