Gaming on a Mac? Here’s how to connect a PS4 or Xbox One controller
As gaming becomes more and more popular, many Mac users have started exploring the realm of gaming on their devices. If you’re a Mac user who also owns a PlayStation 4 or Xbox One, you may be wondering how to connect your console’s controller to your device for a better gaming experience. Fortunately, it’s relatively simple to connect your PS4 or Xbox One controller to your Mac. In this article, we’ll walk you through the process step by step.
Connecting a PS4 Controller to Your Mac
1. Enable Bluetooth: Before starting, make sure that your Mac’s Bluetooth is turned on. You can do this by going to “System Preferences” and then clicking “Bluetooth.” If the Bluetooth is not enabled yet, click the “Turn Bluetooth On” button.
2. Set the controller into pairing mode: Take your PS4 controller and hold down the PlayStation button (the circular button with the logo) and Share button simultaneously for around 3-5 seconds until the light bar starts blinking rapidly.
3. Pair the controller with your Mac: Now go back to your Mac’s Bluetooth settings, where you should see “Wireless Controller” listed under Devices nearby. Click “Connect” next to it, and your PS4 controller should be automatically paired with your Mac.
Connecting an Xbox One Controller to Your Mac
1. Enable Bluetooth: Just like with the PS4 controller, start by making sure that your Mac’s Bluetooth is turned on via “System Preferences.”
2. Set the controller into pairing mode: Press and hold the Xbox button on your controller to turn it on. Then, press and hold the Sync button — a small circular button on top of the controller — until the Xbox logo starts blinking rapidly.
3. Pair the controller with your Mac: In your Mac’s Bluetooth settings, look for “Xbox Wireless Controller” or “X-Input Device” listed under Devices nearby. Click “Connect” next to it, and your Xbox One controller should be automatically paired with your Mac.
Now that you’ve successfully connected your controller to your Mac, you can use it to play a variety of compatible games. Note, however, not all games support the use of controllers on a Mac by default. You may need third-party applications like ControllerMate, Enjoyable, or Joystick Mapper that can help you map the controller’s buttons for specific games.
Regardless of which console you prefer, connecting a PS4 or Xbox One controller to your Mac can take your gaming experience to new heights. Enjoy the immersive gameplay that comes from using a familiar controller as you explore the world of Mac gaming.
