A Brief History of the Walt Disney Company
The Walt Disney Company is one of the most well-known and beloved entertainment companies in the world, but its success didn’t happen overnight. The company was founded by Walt Disney and his brother Roy Disney in 1923 as the Disney Brothers Cartoon Studio, more than 90 years ago.
Walt Disney started in the entertainment industry as a young animator, creating cartoons for the film industry. He had a unique vision for characters, stories and animation. He was keen on creating things that were different from what the industry was used to–ones that were more compelling and immersive for viewers. And that is why he started his own production company for films and cartoons.
Initially, the company produced a series of silent shorts known as the Alice Comedies. The series featured a live-action young girl, Alice, interacting with cartoon characters. The studio’s big break came with the creation of Mickey Mouse in 1928. Disney started making cartoons featuring the iconic character, and the Mickey Mouse Studio was created. The studio produced many successful films featuring Mickey, such as “Steamboat Willie” in 1928, which was one of the first cartoons with synchronized sound.
Throughout the 1930s, Disney released more animated films and expanded their characters, adding classics such as Snow White, Pinocchio, and Fantasia. Walt Disney also wanted to create theme parks that would be a mix of entertainment and education. It wasn’t until Disneyland opened in California in 1955, that his idea came true. The park was a tremendous success, attracting millions of visitors each year.
The Walt Disney Company continued its growth through mergers and acquisitions, such as the 1995 purchase of ABC and its affiliated companies. This gave Disney even more media outlets, including Disney Channel, ESPN, and the History Channel. The company also began producing movies outside of their animated films, with popular films such as “Pirates of the Caribbean,” “Star Wars,” and “Marvel” under its umbrella.
Today, the Walt Disney Company is one of the largest media companies in the world. In 2019, the company had over 223,000 employees and generated over $59 billion in revenue. It continues to expand in many areas, including television, theme parks, film production and merchandising.
From its modest beginnings with Walt Disney and Roy Disney to where it is today, the Walt Disney Company has remained true to its brand values of imagination, creativity, and entertainment. Disney has also shown the world that the spirit of innovation and imagining can go a long way and can create a significant impact on society. The company has created stories and characters that people of all ages can relate to, making the “Disney magic” an integral part of our lives, and it will likely continue to be a beloved icon of entertainment for many generations to come.
